Chelsea are on course to stage an immediate turnaround of fortunes from last season after a host of defensive blunders.

The Blues ended their Premier league campaign as the club that conceded the most goals inside the top 10, despite finishing in 4th place.

Their defence was their achilles heel and something that badly needed to be worked on in all aspects.

They needed to add personnel, that was without a doubt. Frank Lampard brought in Edouard Mendy between the sticks, experienced veteran centre back Thiago Silva, and England international left back Ben Chilwell to shore up the back line.

All three have come in and made an instant impact. Chelsea have had 5 clean sheets in their last 6 matches, and 4 clean sheets in a row in their last 4.

It’s a total transformation from last season, and they have equalled a 10-year old defensive club record. The last time they had 5 clean sheets in a row was in 2010.

Chelsea beat Rennes 3-0 at Stamford Bridge to equal that 10 year clean sheet record.Timo Werner scored two great penalties and Tammy Abraham added a third right after half time to put the game to bed.

Rennes had one short on target which was saved by former goalkeeper Mendy who had a normal day between the posts.

Rennes defender Dalbert did take a second yellow card after a VAR handball decision. The red card did take a little sting out of Rennes game but it was a brilliant individual performances all round for Chelsea

Chelsea play Sheffield United at home on Saturday and will be hoping to shut them out and set a new clean sheet  and defensive club record.
