The Welsh international has started the last two Premier League matches for United but has struggled for consistency throughout the calendar year.
James burst onto the scene with three goals in his opening four matches when he moved to Old Trafford last year, but has scored just three more goals in his subsequent 50 appearances.
The 23-year-old played for just under an hour during the Boxing Day draw against Leicester City where he struggled to make any real impact on the proceedings.
Despite his recent revival James is no longer a regular in United match day squads, with many fans still unsure of the long-term role he has to play at the club.
MEN Sport ran a poll on Sunday afternoon asking what the club should do with James next month, with the majority of supporters backing a loan move for him.
6,686 fans voted in the survey with 55 per cent of those suggesting a temporary move would be best for his development plan.
24 per cent of supporters suggested the Welsh winger should be sold in January while 21 per cent of them voted to keep James at the club and use him as a squad option in the second-half of the season.
