Roy Hodgson hails Eberechi Eze after Crystal Palace star nets wonder goal against Sheffield United to end the Eagles’ five-game winless run
Roy Hodgson hailed the Eberechi Eze wonder goal that sealed Crystal Palace’s win against Sheffield United.
Eze produced an audacious finish from the edge of his box at the end of a run that began in his own half.
The playmaker, a £19.5m summer addition, came off the bench against Sheffield United to score, replacing Jeffrey Schlupp who netted Palace’s first to cap a fine four-man move.
Hodgson said: ‘We saw two very good goals, but I think the one you’re referring to is the one by Eberechi which was a fantastic run from his own half of the field and a wonderful burst forward and a very composed finish. It came at just the right time in a way that it made the second half a little bit less hairy than it might have been.
‘I’ve seen some very good goals recently but unfortunately most of them have been against us, that’s the problem, so it was nice to see one for us for a change. A lot of the goals that we’ve conceded, in particular against West Ham and Liverpool, were incredible finishes that you don’t see every day so it was nice that we got one this time.’
Chris Wilder slammed his struggling sides defending for the goal and also hit out at the officials for allowing it to stand.
Five minutes of added time were signalled but Eze netted in the 51st minute of the first half.
Wilder said: ‘Naïve from out point of view. We should do so much better with that goal when he comes over on his right, we didn’t get bodies over, bodies around him, attempt to make contact and obviously it’s a fabulous finish but the lead up to it, we don’t need to play quick.
‘We took that decision and then I’m listening to the fourth official counting down when the ball’s on the far side and he’s counting down from 20 to 10 and “that’s it” and he said “that’s it” about five times.
‘He [referee Stuart Attwell] was never going to blow the whistle when the boy picked it up, they never do. Our naivety, our poor play in terms of not stopping that goal and obviously a mountain to climb after that.’
