Gerwyn Price claimed his first PDC World Championship on Sunday night by toppling Gary Anderson at Alexandra Palace – the high point of a fascinating career which has also seen him play professional rugby and pose in the nude.
The Welshman missed 11 match darts before securing a 7-3 victory over Anderson, having registered the highest average in championship history (136.6) earlier in the match.
It has been a remarkable journey for Price, who only started competing on the PDC circuit in 2014 after enjoying a brief career in professional rugby.
His stocky, bulked-up build on the back of his rugby exploits makes him looks somewhat out of place on the Oche, as not many darts players find themselves in such good shape.
And Price has even shown off his muscly physique in a naked photoshoot for The Times as part of their My Sporting Body segment.
He told Daily Star Sport : ”I had never done anything like it before so I was a bit anxious and I wasn’t sure I wanted to do it!
Nevertheless, Price admits that finding the time to pump iron has proved tricky since he burst onto the darting scene seven years ago.
“I have been away a lot compared to what I have done in previous years,” he said.
“I have been going up the rankings, getting more invitations to other tournaments and stuff.
“It is just trying to find the balance and the time.
“You can’t train right before games because doing a gun session or an arm session and having to play the next day, it is just not possible.
“So over the past 18 months it has been difficult to try and fit that in.
“In terms of weights and stuff, I haven’t done anything. I have been doing some road running and conditioning and I seem to be doing that a lot more than lifting any weights.”
Price earned himself a mouthwatering cheque worth £500,000 for beating Anderson in the world championship final, while the crestfallen Scot collected a consolation prize worth £250,000.
