Before that, he was a regular for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League and it is this experience at the highest level that led to Ole Gunner Solskjaer to consider a move for the player this month.

The Man United manager is believed to be on the lookout to recruit a new right-back to Old Trafford during the transfer window to provide some much-needed competition to first-choice Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Having seen the way in which Luke Shaw reacted to the signing of Alex Telles, he has been eager to add competition and depth to other areas of the pitch. Shaw has played exceptionally well since the arrival of Telles and Solskjaer wants Wan-Bissaka to do the same.

One of the main priorities is at right-back and he believes that Trippier could be the player they need to boost that further competition for places.

However, whether a move will happen for the Englishman now is another matter. Trippier has been handed a 10-week ban for betting offences and it means that a move to Old Trafford could now be scuppered.

Before the ban, it looked like a move could be in the pipeline with United quite keen to bring him back to England but now he could remain in Spain.

As well as Tottenham and Atletico, Tripper has, of course, represented his country at several major tournaments and was also a part of a Burnley side, as a youngster, that was promoted from the Championship into the Premier League.

He also began his career at Barnsley, battling at the bottom of the second tier as a 19-year old.

Whether he shall make his return to the Premier League is yet to be seen. Yet, with the ban taken into consideration, a move to United is unlikely.
