The Ogun State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Student, NANS, has asked the Federal Government to order for the immediate arrest of an Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abubakar Gumi, for allegedly promoting the activities of banditry in the country.
The students’ body is not pleased with the way the Federal Government is treating Gumi as if he is the Messiah.
NANS insisted that for Gumi to have supported armed bandits who have kept kidnapping and terrorizing the nation, he should be treated like a “criminal.”
INFOXCLUSIVE recalls that in recent times, Gumi has been negotiating with bandits and even said all bandits are not criminals.
President Buhari joined other northern elders on Thursday in saying that all bandits should be treated as criminals.
The Ogun State Chairman of NANS, Damilola Simeon, in a statement, alleged that Gumi was making the criminal activities of bandits in the north justifiable.
Gumi has recently accused the military of triggering the banditry in the north, he alleged that non-muslim soldiers were used to carrying out orchestrated killings.
But, NANS while responding said the claims of Gumi are baseless and false.
The NANS chairman expressed fear that the recent comments and attitude of Gumi could encourage banditry to continue and further threaten the peace and unity of the nation.
The student leader further called on the Federal Government and all security agents to investigate Gumi due to his associations with people he described as “criminals and enemies of the State.”
“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately order the arrest of Gumi for his alleged support and association with armed bandits.
