The state government of Kwara has ordered the closure of ten schools indefinitely for refusing to enforce the wearing of hijaab. Christian students predominate in the schools affected.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has vehemently opposed the Kwara state government’s plans to make Hijaab compulsory in all schools across the state, arguing that making Hijaab compulsory will expose Christian students who do not wear it to terrorist attacks. Mrs Kemi Adeosun, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, listed the schools affected as C&S College Sabo Oke, ST. Anthony College, Offa Road, ECWA School, Oja Iya, Surulere Baptist Secondary School, Bishop Smith Secondary School, Agba Dam, CAC Secondary School Asa Dam Road, St. Barnabas Secondary School Sabo Oke, and St. John School Mara. Mrs Adeosun said the schools will remain closed for’safety reasons’ in a statement posted on the Kwara state government’s official Facebook page on Monday.
Teachers and students in the affected schools have been told to stay at home by the state government. Schools that have followed the directive, which is considered anti-Christian, are open for business.

The Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development wishes to inform the public that the ten government schools where the wearing of the hijaab is disputed will remain closed until a later date.” “This decision was made for the sake of safety.
